Bergamo/Brescia/Monte Isola, Italy

Light is Life, among the winners of the Best Cultural Event award at the Best Event Awards 2023, transformed Brescia and Bergamo, Capital of Culture, and later also Monte Isola, into open-air museums. The great success in terms of audience (670,000 people) and media coverage, as well as in the arts and institutional sectors, is due to the Artistic Direction's ability to highlight the value of the places and their history through an emotional and immersive narrative, which made the experience unforgettable. Thanks to Light is Life, Festa delle Luci A2A, the client, the institutions, and the involved territories received exceptional visibility and were able to showcase their values, as only the language of art and the sensitivity of a prominent Artistic Direction can achieve.

Luxometro

Rome, Italy

LUXOMETRO is the pioneering luminous art performance in which the artist explores the macro-micro relationship on an urban scale, symbolizing the dominance of nature over the individual human being.

The artistic intervention involved relocating Europe's largest Gasometer, an industrial archaeology monument standing over 90 meters tall, into the urban landscape. More than 10 kilometers of LED tubing were affixed to its metal structure, with segments lighting up and dimming in sync with the music.

This striking and minimalist light installation asserted its presence across a wide area, altering the usual nighttime perception and casting a powerful impression within a several-kilometer radius. The City of Rome estimates that over 2 million people witnessed it.

Third Paradise Of Energy

Monte Isola, Italy

The Third Paradise of Energy is the outcome of a collaboration between Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto, A2A, and the Banco dell’Energia Foundation.

This joint creation by Michelangelo Pistoletto and Angelo Bonello, with curatorship by Fortunato D’Amico, was realized on Monte Isola in July 2023, using recycled materials, discarded LED lights, and nets produced on the island.

The artwork serves as a unique medium full of meaning, through which ideas, concepts, and emotions are conveyed to the audience during the enchanting summer nights.

Viewed from above, the installation resembles a luminous constellation, with an olive branch at its center. It evokes the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda and reflects the concept of Preventive Peace, a vision promoted by Michelangelo Pistoletto through the symbolic sign of the Third Paradise.

Run Beyond

Run Beyond is a call to transcend the limits set by reason.

The artwork depicts a figure making an impossible leap amidst a surrealistic run.

Run Beyond becomes a space for a liberating act,

encouraging individuals to overcome fears and constraints, allowing them to open themselves with the power of imagination to new cultures, fresh friendships, and unexplored horizons.

Running serves as the perfect symbol for freedom—it is the most spontaneous and instinctive action of a human being,

who runs both to flee from danger and to reach what draws him in.

The artwork is presented as a continuous cycle:

the running begins, pauses, and then begins again—mirroring the rhythm of life itself.

Ballerina Sequence

Ballerina is a homage to the dreams of young girls around the world who strive to touch the infinite through their movement and creativity.

The piece is entirely crafted from light, continuously re-enacting the figurative movements of a circular ballet, flawlessly synchronized with its musical accompaniment.

The observer is drawn in, almost hypnotized, by an effect akin to a grand music box, captivated by subtle elements that engage their focus on a deeper, subconscious level.

The flawless alignment with the music's rhythm recalls the elegance and fluidity of a royal dance, while its repetitive form invites us into a boundless space of yearning—yearning for infinite love, limitless light, and eternal life.

Set within this ethereal landscape, the luminous Ballerina dances on in the sky, performing endless steps and pirouettes, completely absorbed in her unbroken sequence, seemingly oblivious to the surrounding world of architecture, pathways, railings, lampposts, and benches, which all envelop her in the loving embrace of the city below.

Tessellis

London/Bergamo/Chengdu

At the heart of the designated space, eighteen large, glowing tiles are arranged in a regular pattern. These tiles resemble fragments of an ancient mosaic, remnants of a lost civilization emerging from the earth. They take on simple geometric forms and, through an alternating sequence of light and dark, shift from ancient symbols of a cryptic code to modern expressions of a dynamic and complex visual language. The images formed by the assembling and disassembling of these tiles guide us on a journey from ancient cities to the future metropolis, where animals reclaim the world.

Big Ballerina

The classical ballet dancer as an icon of beauty and external elegance but also emblem of the hard discipline required to approach an Ideal of perfection that costs sacrifice.
The aesthetic completeness of the sculpture is constantly put in question by the dynamics of light and by a sound which breaks its harmonious and alanced image, creating an emotional disturbance, in a parallel that inspires a reflection between ethics and aesthetics.

Things We Cannot Forget

Brescia, Italy

With this strikingly visual and emotionally powerful piece, Angelo Bonello chooses to engage directly with the local community.

After gathering the voices of Brescia's citizens, who were invited to share what aspects of their culture, personal lives, and traditions must not be forgotten or should be preserved, the artist creates a circular auditory narrative, while streams of luminous letters flow across a 70-meter-long LED wall.

This is a collective artwork, offering the community a meaningful part of its own experience, elevating it, and guiding it toward a future where the personal becomes shared and collective.

This Is My Place

Italy

The isolation experienced by people during the COVID pandemic inspired Bonello to create “This is my place”.

The idea behind this work stems from a primal question: What is the space in which and the way how a person should live?

The equilateral triangle, the quintessential Platonic form and the origin of many complex shapes in nature, divides the space into distinct realms—the home, the place of refuge (nature), and the boundary that separates it from civilization.

The performance takes place within this temporary and inviolable space, which can be set up either in nature or in urban settings like squares or parks. It invites the audience to walk, sleep, reflect, stand, and move in and out in an endless cycle, serving as a metaphor for continuous forward movement and never ceasing.

One of the vertices of the triangle has been precisely aligned with the point of sunset, positioning the artwork as an environmental compass guiding the way to eternity, marked by the eternal cycle of sunrise and sunset, day and night—symbolizing the perfect balance between nature and progress.

Ai Data Mapping

The 3D mapping artworks are site-specific, created for Palazzo della Loggia in Brescia and Palazzo Nuovo in Piazza Vecchia in Bergamo.
The mapping features visual content developed by artificial intelligence, drawing from the artistic heritage of Brescia and the digital database of the "Angelo Mai" Library.
The visual and sound effects make these works striking and impactful, simultaneously enhancing the architecture of the building, the history of the city, and its artistic and cultural heritage to the fullest.

Vittoria Trasfigurata

Brescia, Italy

Vittoria Trasfigurata is a sophisticated modern reinterpretation of a classical art sculpture.

It will consist of two components: a physical part and a graphic part, created by combining the projection of video images with laser light.

On a rigid silhouette, approximately 5 meters tall, that mimics the profile of an ancient statue, the projected video animations depict the composition and decomposition of certain details of the sculpture. Meanwhile, the synchronized laser beam gives the illusion that the light itself is sculpting the raw material, engaging the audience in an endless cycle of continuous creation.
